Most of us don’t like to think about our mortality.

But I think contemplating death every now and then fosters wisdom.

We’re always looking forward, often racing to the next chapter. But what about when it’s time to look backward? What will we hope we did when our time is just about up?

What are five wishes you have for your life when you’re on your deathbed?

That’s what Gay Hendricks explores in his book “Five Wishes”.

Here are mine:

  1. That I spent lots of time fully present with those I love and was there for them
  2. That I had fun, slowed down, and enjoyed the process (rather than chasing outcomes)
  3. That I explored my full humanity and who I am and what I love outside of work
  4. That I prioritized adventure and didn’t take anything too seriously
  5. That I gave back to and supported communities I hold dear to the best of my ability

If you feel called to, write down five deathbed wishes that come to mind for you.

Once you have them, reframe each into an aim.

Here’s my attempt at that:

  1. Spend time fully present with those I love
  2. Have fun, slow down, and enjoy the process
  3. Explore who I am and what I love outside of my career
  4. Go on adventures
  5. Engage with and give back to communities I care about

I like this exercise because it’s a fairly quick way to take stock of whether or not you’re living your life in alignment with your values and essence.

What are your five deathbed wishes? Are you living life in alignment with your values?
